I don’t know about you, but December has felt like one giant race. Days and weeks of doing, doing, doing, of adding more to our already full lives — taking away from what I feel Christmas should centre upon: settling in, settling down, gathering with our people, remembering all the things we’re blessed with.
This last week before Christmas, we’re making bigger efforts to create more calm and to make space for being together without all the noise. Yesterday, we had such a wonderful day at home, gardening, jumping on trampolines under sprinklers, chasing chickens, unpacking our market haul, watching Christmas movies. It was just what everyone needed to re-set. While Joel and the kids were resting, I tried my hand at making some baby balms, a happy little thirty minutes in my kitchen feeding my soul with that special kind of fuel that comes from only one thing: Making.
Here are some simple, 3-ingredient recipes to try at home to make some beautiful, non toxic balms for your baby or child. Don’t be put off if you’ve never tried making body products before – once you have the ingredients, it’s easy and satisfying to do! I’ve linked where I source all the ingredients from. I made a couple of extra batches of Calm Baby Balm to gift some friends this coming week, one has a newborn, one has a toddler – both able to benefit from the gentle, relaxing balm rubbed on at night time to promote sleep and calm. These balms would also make a really thoughtful and sweet homemade gift for a new mother in your life.
Preference wise, I like my balms to be a bit firmer and less runny and oily. This means a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio of beeswax to coconut oil works the best. Just follow the instructions below with the exact measurements if you like a firmer balm also.
To make the balm base:
Melt 1/4 cup of beeswax pellets and 1 cup of organic coconut oil (from any grocery store) in a double boiler. An easy way to do this is grab a glass jar, pop in the beeswax and coconut oil, then pop the jar into a saucepan of boiling water, watching as it gradually melts to liquid form.
Once melted, pour the mix into your containers of choice. I used small round tins I found in a bargain store, but you could use small mason jars, or really any type of glass container. These measurements made roughly 4 containers.
Then add your essential oil drops into each tin, give it a little mix, and let it set (I put it in the fridge to set and it took no time at all)
Calm Baby Balm:
For massaging into skin before sleep time.
10 drops lavender
10 drops roman chamomile
10 drops sweet orange
Baby Bottom Balm:
For skin irritations and nappy rash.
10 drops lavender
10 drops tea tree
Breathe Easy Balm:
A chest rub for cold and flus, congested sinuses, respiratory problems.
20 drops Young Living’s R.C.

Many nappy rash creams and baby body lotions, even those labeled ‘natural’, contain chemicals and petroleum products and just ingredients that don’t need to be in there. If you haven’t tried making body products before, I gently nudge you to give it a go. Simple ingredients, affordable, non toxic and they really heal. Coconut oil is so good for the skin – it’s antiviral, antimicrobial and moisturising. Beeswax is antibacterial and antiviral and it acts as a barrier and protects skin. And the essential oils have properties in them that really work. We use a combination of Young Living and Rocky Mountain Oils. (I have to say, I like the quality of Young Living more, but Rocky Mountain Oils are more affordable. At the moment, we’re just trialling which oils and blends are equal and which ones I really do need to source from Young Living. I can write up which are our go-to oils in everyday life and which brand we use for each, and a basic oil cabinet to get you started if that is of help to anyone?)
